Performance and New Media

Digital art remains an expanding field within dance, where the integration of new technologies, despite several significant examples, still holds untapped aesthetic and artistic potential. In this project, the body serves as the central driver of movement, but it evolves in relation to its artificial “double,” creating a communicative space where choreographic boundaries are challenged and Gesture is redefined. While this work is inherently a process in development, its performative possibilities are already being explored.

Né Barros

Taking a generative approach to performance in its digital form, an attempt is made to create virtual environments of transformation and transition—spaces that exist between real spaces, endowed with corporeality and interactivity, in a synergy between light and darkness, between body and gesture, between the real and the digital.

João Martinho Moura

Since 2009, João Martinho Moura and Né Barros have been collaborating on various projects in a continuous laboratory process exploring the intersection of media art and performance. This project initially emerged as a collaborative work between Balleteatro and the Master’s program in Technology and Digital Art at the University of Minho. From the start, it proved to be an excellent example of the synergies between different facets of creativity. Bringing together performance, visual arts, sound, and technology into a coherent and complementary whole, the project highlights the importance of collaborations between art and technology. The languages of these two seemingly disparate fields intertwine, and when mutually understood, they generate a powerful discourse.

Currently, the artists have been developing their projects in collaboration with various entities, such as the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Porto, theaters, galleries, and museums, as well as with artists from different fields, including architecture, scenography, music, theater, and cinema.
